In the first part of the paper, using the monolingual corpora (FRANTEXT, SYN2015 and BNC), we identify the basic variability of introductory verbs in reporting clauses placed medially of finally (in Czech, English and French). The shares of the Czech basic introductory verb řekl/a in translated and non-translated texts are compared in the translation corpus Jerome.
Afterwards, we use these data in the second part of the paper and we analyze the translation counterparts of the basic introductory verbs in the Czech-French-English sub-corpus of the InterCorp parallel corpus (narrative texts). We try to test the hypothesis that because of the differences of stylistic norms, Czech translators have to replace many French and English basic introductory verbs with semantically specific ones, especially using the explicitation.
