Tunneled pleural catheters - A novel option for palliation of pleural effusions

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2016

Abstract

Malignant pleural effusions are an increasingly frequent problem. For many years, tunneled pleural catheters have been used for palliation of the effusions.

Currently, this approach is rising in popularity in many countries. In the Czech Republic, however, surgical pleurodesis seems to prevail over clinical methods.

In the literature, we have found no evidence of the use of tunneled pleural catheters in the Czech Republic. Presented are a guide for catheter placement and analysis of benefits and drawbacks associated with the method.
