Stories from the Scanning Microscope 7. Zoological Garden in Lake Sediments

Abstract

Despite the fact that lakes of natural origin belong to rare phenomena in the contemporary Czech landscape, dozens of paleolakes existed in the Late Glacial and the Early Holocene (15 000 - 8 000 years ago). Their sediments represent important natural archives which allow reconstruction of past environmental changes.

For this purpose, we often use numerous remains of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates preserved in these sediments.
