Abstract

The paper is focused on intercultural elements and motifs in the works of Ivo Andric, particularly on complex differences in cultural traditions; Symbolic West, East and especially the Orient. We can identify several themes in Andric's approach, melancholy, contrasting subjectivity and especially embodiment of evil as an occurrence that is immanent and could be considered vocal opposition to south Slavic literary tradition based on heroization of singular identity that automatically rejects any in-between identities.

The representations of "otherness" in Andric's works are not only binary oppositions of a "foreign" as rivaling non-European tradition described through the prejudices and stereotypes, but also is "portrayal of otherness" in the gender perspective. His short stories, as analyzed short story Anika epitomizes gender pressure on female heroines.

Mostly through the disruptions of the normative modernist stereotypes of angelic virginal Mary, embodiment of sublime and unattainable femininity and irrational femme fatale, in many ways reflecting more mysterious and sensual "oriental" tradition.
