Abstract

The article is focused on the current posture of the toponyms, which have a relationship to Czech immigration to the United States of America between 1848 and 1914. Nearly half a million of Czechs leave Austria (Austria-Hungary) and stayed in the USA.

There are some notes to the scheme, motivation and problems of assimilation in the article. The text shows, how were the "Czech" toponyms disappearing and how were under the influence of English transforming.

Special attention is paid to the names on the territory of the former third-largest Czech city - Chicago. The language issue is closely linked with the ethno-historical development of the Czech community in the USA, which was really different in the urban and rural areas.
