A methodology for the translation analysis of large literary texts corpora

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The article partly expands on Jiří Levý's concept of translational norm and studies different approaches to analysis of big literary translation corpora, covers the methods suggested by renowned "Western", Czech, Slovak and Russian translation theorists, as well as looks for an optimal way of translation analysis of large literary corpora depending on specific goals of such analysis. The article also explores the issues of translation criticism and translational norm as key aspects of analysis of this kind.

As a practical example, we use the 2,000-page translations of Czech author Bohumil Hrabal's works into Russian. The main practical output of this article is a universal, and at the same time a very particular scheme of analysis, tailored to massive literary translation corpora.
