Abstract

In the region of Southeastern Europe Romanians with their Daco-Romanian language are the main bearers of the Latin legacy of the Roman Empire. However, apart from the, there are further etnhic groups in the Balkan Peninsula speaking the languages derived from Latin: Istro-Romanians, Megleno-Romanians and Aromanians.

Although Aromanians have never established any organised state entity, they created their own culture, having influenced the cultural development in the Ottoman Empire in the 17th and 18th centuries. At present, their number is estimated at 300,000 - 600,000.

They live as an ethnic minority on the territory of a number of states. However, they are often subject to systematic assimilation.
