Ivan Medekʼs Press Agency: Service to Homeland

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2016

Abstract

Ivan Medek established his press agency right after his arrival in Vienna, his new home in exile. The main goal was to support the domestic opposition.

The core activity of this agency laid in the fast and regular provision of information regarding Czechoslovak civil initiatives towards western press agencies, media, Czechoslovak exile, international institutions and human rights organizations. Medek distributed documents of Charter 77 movement and The Committee for the Defence of the Unjustly Persecuted: open letters, information about persecuted Czechoslovak citizens and other independent news that he received from Czechoslovakia.

The news about political events in Czechoslovakia therefore appeared in western printed media as well as in broadcastings of western radio and television stations. The news then travelled back to Czechoslovakia via western radio broadcastings such as Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, BBC, Radio Vatican and Deutsche Welle, and via exile periodicals.
