Abstract

The monograph is devoted to the lay scholar David Gans (1541-1613) who - as the first Jewish historian in the Ashkenazi sphere - realized his work professionally. The monograph brings an analysis of his chronicle Tzemah David (Sprout of David, Prague 1592) as the model of his methodology that was based on scientific principles of the Renaissance.

Besides the author's purpose to popularize the knowledge of history, there is mainly stressed the collection and elaboration of both Jewish and non-Jewish sources, as they were used for the parallel survey of Jewish and general history in two parts of the book. The monograph was published together with the complete commentated translation of the chronicle to the Czech.
