Laboratory investigation in patients in acute medical situations (polytrauma, acute illness, metabolic disturbances, cardiac arrest) is very specific. It must be very quick and with high quality.
POCT analysis is very quick; on the other hand the quality is limited. Commentary by experienced laboratory specialist is extremely useful as the simple use of "reference range" is unsatisfactory.
Complex consideration and dynamic changes are extremely important.
