Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The glottalized segment named "ráz" in Czech linguistic terminology belongs to the effective word sandhi signals in Czech. Two relevant variants of its realisation represent canonical glottal stop and creak.

The chapter summarizes the main information about this segment, based on both previous and actual research. The acoustic quality, position in Czech sound system, regularities in occurrence in different segmental contexts, functional effect in communication, differences in usage due to speaker's dialect and any other aspects are brought under the discussion.

Some actual data about frequency of glottalisation in different text types are appended.
