Abstract

Adult-onset cerebellar ataxias form a heterogenous group of sporadic and heredodegenerative disorders. Their aetiology remains despite recent advances in genetic and immunologic diagnostic often unknown.

Some of these ataxias come along with multiorgan autoimmune or metabolic disorders, most often with thyreopathy, diabetes, coeliac disease or vitamin deficits. Particularly the non-cerebellar features and paraclinical markers may be crucial for establishing a correct diagnosis.

Moreover, these disorders provide valuable insight into more general metabolic principles and open possibilities for new treatments. In this review, we summarize some of the ataxias associated with endocrinologic and metabolic disorders with special emphasis on diabetes.
