The paper aims to characterize the discussions about the river regulation in České Budějovice before the First World War. The utilitirian project including the filling of the river bed beside the historical center and development of the adjacent island (nowadays called Sokolský) was opposed by the Klub Za Staré Budějovice (Club for Old Budějovice).
After a series of expert and public discussions, the club defended successfully an alternative preservation concept of the island as a part of "green ring" around the city center. The importance of public green spaces in the urban planning of Budějovice was in this idea fully appreciated for the first time.
