The chapter presents the current state of the English phonetics and phonology teaching in the education of lower- and upper-secondary teachers in the Czech Republic. The main emphasis is put on the comprehensive description of how these two disciplines are taught at the Department of the English Language and Literature, Faculty of Education in Prague.
Simultaneously, the process of didactisation of the English pronunciation drawing on both theoretical and practical knowledge of the English phonetics and phonology is scrutinised. The following topics are discussed: the role of pronunciation teaching and learning in the rapidly changing world, the choice and structure of pronunciation material or the goals of pronunciation teaching as they are defined in the official documents.
Both linguistic and didactic perspectives are considered inseparable at universities preparing future English teachers.
