Theological and philosophical perspective in the rectorial speeches of Jan Hus

Abstract

This contribution comprises five short units. The first briefly informs the reader about Hus's student years, his progress at the University in Prague, leading him to the faculty of arts and later also to the theological faculty, including his office as dean of the faculty of arts, his career as a clergyman linked to the Bethlehem Chapel to the beginning of his pedagogical activities learning by Bible reading (1390-1404).

The second, shorter section introduces the two philosophical-theological schools of the time: nominalism and realism. The third part contains a short essay concerning the ecclesiastic and political situation of the period preceding the issuance of the Kutná Hora Decree.

The fourth section comprises several shorter pieces, the content of which focuses on the situation in Prague before the election of the rector, The last, fifth part sums up under headings Hus's philosophical, theological and spiritual efforts aimed at forming harmonious relations between employees of the university.
