"Boa e má imprensa": Media and Catholic reaction to secularization in Republican Brazil (1889-1930)

Abstract

Process of separation of Church and State after the rise of First Brazilian Republic (1889-1930) caused shock to local Catholic authorities and lead to creation of reactionary movement, focused on Catholic renwewal both of state institution and society as a whole. Catholic press, so-called "boa imprensa" (literally "good press), was key instrument of this movement and its political goals.

This conference paper is dealing with creation and ideological fundaments of Brazilian "good press", formulation of its goals and its influence, based on original sources, especially Fransican biweekly Mensageiro da Fé, published since 1902 in city of Salvador.
