Abstract

This work is a contribution to the issue of literacy of Roma pupils. Importance of literacy for individuals today is absolutely crucial; Research results suggest that people with developed skills gramotnostními have increased the probability that they will have higher self-esteem, better health, more satisfying jobs and higher wages than people with low skills gramotnostními.

The risk of reduced levels of literacy are the most vulnerable people from different cultural backgrounds, unemployed and unskilled people, people with very low levels of education and people from underprivileged. Roma pupils belong to a group of people threatened by risk and it is therefore necessary to set up measures for its elimination.

The need to develop language competence of Roma pupils in English, including the ability to read with comprehension, it also Roma Integration Strategies by 2020. The work focuses on two research questions: (1) whether and how the test results differ reading literacy of Roma and non-Roma pupils, and (2) describes the factors of the home and school environment that the development of literacy of Roma pupils interact.
