Abstract

Encyclopedia entry introduces Czech-Slovak language contact in terms of coexistence and interaction of Czech and Slovak in the course of historical development characterised by changes of different language situations. From the synchronic point of view it comprises a question of the structural proximity and mutual intelligibility of Czech and Slovak as a precondition of the receptive bilingualism and its application in the Czech-Slovak communicative interaction.

In the diachronic perspective it comprises the development of mutual relations in different historical periods, divergent, convergent and parallel processes, including the existence of the contact phenomena as a result of direct and indirect language contact and deliberate steps in the language standardisation.
