Abstract

Coloproctology is an important surgical specialization. The field focuses on diagnostics and both surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the intestine, especially the large intestine, the rectum and the anus.

The spectrum of issues covered by coloproctology also includes abdominal catastrophes of an intestinal origin, regardless of their cause - intestinal affectation, a different abdominal issue or a postoperative complication. All these conditions affect the patients' quality of life and their activities in life, both in an immediate sense and in longer term as well.

The book Coloproctology brings the most up to date view of the important issues of diagnostics and treatment of these catastrophes, including bleeding in the lower part of the digestive tract, complications of stomas, their prevention and solutions for them, safety control for anastomosis, new stapler techniques and new alternatives for solving anorectal fistulas and defects. An important, critical even part of the publication is quality control, not just in colorectal surgery.

The chapters are written by specialists who are highly respected in their fields. The editors have a long term association with both Czech and European coloproctology and its expert sections, presenting in this publication up to date and high quality original texts, in accordance with current level of knowledge.
