The article deals with several potential problems of the verb valency contrastive research in Czech and Polish language. In the beginning some terminological and more general questions (definition of the valency, obligatory/optional valency, changing valency) as well as the complicated relationship form- meaning are noticed, later the discrepancy between formal similarity and semantic equivalency of Czech and Polish "false friend" verbs, the variance of valency as well as its stylistic (different stylistic value) and pragmatic (frequency, context restrictions) aspects.
In the end there is an example of the contrastive valency analysis illustrated with Czech and Polish verbs of calling/telephoning.
