Abstract

Article describes the roots and early history of biochemistry in the world context as well as the foundations of biochemical societies. The mother country of biochemistry must be considered Germany, the next being United Kingdom.

The first biochemical society was established in the United States in 1906 as The American Society of Biological Chemists. The first European biochemical society was The Biochemical Club in 1911 in Britain, later renamed to The Biochemical Society.
