Abstract

Although most patients with psychiatric disorders are not aggressive, epidemiologic evidence shows an increased risk for violence in this group when compared with the general population. Violent or threattening behaviour is a frequent cause for admission to a psychiatric unit, and this behaviour may presist after admission De-escalation techniques are a recommended non-physical intervention for the management of violence and agitation.

De-escalation consist of assesment of the situation (to determine the level of escalation, riskr and source of conflict) communication (verbal as well as nonverbal) and negotiation.
