Assaults by men and women with psychosis and the importance of victimization

Abstract

To prevent violence among persons with psychosis, further knowledge of con-tributing factors is needed. These factors may vary by sex and nation.

We offer here results of our study examined factors associated with assaults by 158 participants with psychosis and a matched sample of healthy adults. The strongest predictors of assaults were childhood sexual abuse and recent physical victimi-zation among women and recent physical victimization among males.

Serious assaults were associated with high levels of psychotic symptoms. Substance misuse played a minor role.

Prediction instruments of the risk of violent behav-iour should involve also recent victimization.
