Psychosocial functioning in patients with schizophrenia and possible ways to influence it

Abstract

1. Contemporary concept of psychiatrie care aim to reach recovery of illness.

Recovery does not necessarily mean complete remission of psychotic symptoms, but it is connected with the most possible degree of psychosocial functionning in patients with schizophrenia. Work and social functioning correlates with many illness-related and also sociodemographic factors.

Factors predicting worsening of common daily-life functioning include persisting of negative psychotic symptoms (especially motivation deficits), lenght of illness and level of cognitive deficit. Treatment adherence is also integral component.

Degree of psychosocial functioning can be therapeutically influenced by many approaches including individal case-management leading to social inclusion of a patient, technics supporting treatment adherence, various psychological approaches (mainly cognitive-behavioral technics) containng training of social skills and cognitive abilities. Mobile and internet based technics in also in focus lately.

The presentation include original data concening assessment of psychosocial functioning and influencing factors in the sample of patients with schizophrenia in the Czech Republic
