Estimation of an unknown cartographic projection and its parameters from a map

Publication

Abstract

New methods and techniques for the map analysis allow for the creation of full or partial geometric reconstruction of its content. This approach belongs to the category of cartometric analysis.

The book presents new methods (M6, M7, M7S, M8, and M9) for the estimation of an unknown map projection and its parameters differing in the number of determined parameters, reliability, robustness, and convergence, but their computational demands are similar. The first strategy is based on the weighted non-linear least squares, which is globally convergent to the local minimum; finding the global minimum is not ensured.

Despite this fact, it provides fast and reliable results, which, in most situations, are not worse overall for this problem than the global minimizer. The global optimization strategy is more computationally expensive; the number of the objective function evaluations may be excessive.

It is not appropriate for real-time analysis but suitable for minimizing the shape-similarity functions or to verify the quality of the NLS solution.
