Autogenic training (AT) is the most common and traditional European method of relaxation. Its aim is to achieve muscle relaxation and mental relaxation.
It is also to improve the function of internal organs and auto-suggestive influence. AT efficacy has been demonstrated repeatedly in surveys not only in relation to stress management, the ability to experience relaxation and the improvement of concentration and learning, but also in relation to the treatment of psychosomatic problems, especially sleep disorders and pain relief.
The method also has self-knowledge and self-development potential. The aim of the training, which is typically led by a therapist, is to ensure that the client is able to practice the method without outside help.
Over the years, the methods became an entire psychotherapeutic approach called "autogenic therapy". An important aspect of the exercise is the immediate accessibility and "independence" from another person.
This publication covers the history of the method, the personality of its creator J. H.
Schultz and his followers, indications and contraindications, forms of training, a practical description of the individual AT stages, suitable positions for training, work with intentional formulas, autogenous meditation and therapy, research in AT, its connections to music, and a variety of other topics. At the end of the book, the reader will find an overview of problems and diseases that can be successfully influenced by AT.
