2016

Abstract

Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) had a crucial influence on the painting in Bohemia in the first half of the 16th century. The detailed study of this important era is divided into three major parts.

The first part is dedicated to the methodological approaches dealing with the work of Lucas Cranach and his workshop within the predominantly German, but also Czech Art History. The second part is focused on chosen artworks created by Lucas Cranach with some relationship to Bohemia and Moravia.

The third part of the book is dedicated to the artworks by Cranach's disciples and followers, either imported to Bohemia and Moravia from Saxony or they were created locally under influence of Lucas Cranach. The book brings new information on the Bohemian Art in the first half of the 16th century in and its cultural ties with the German milieu.

A number of works, largely unknown to the scholars outside of the local Art History have been newly interpreted or put into new context.
