The Depiction of Husite Symbols in the Renaissance Illuminations

Abstract

In the manuscripts of the 16th century we can encounter the type of miniatures which reflect the differences among confessional faiths. Especially in graduals created for Utraquist donors there was usually a depiction of Master Jan Hus burning at the stake, marking the indirect beginning of the Hussite wars.

Occasionally we can see a miniature with Jan Zizka as the leader of Hussite troops or an execution of miners near Poděbrady or the Krivoklat Castle. A part of the paper is devoted to the depiction of a chalice, which is considered a symbol of Utraquists.

However, it is necessary to take into account the context in which the chalice appears.
