Extreme physical exercise can be harmful or even lethal. Organism uses several compensatory mechanisms, like metabolic system rearrangement, increase of cardiac output, blood flow redistribution, increase of tidal volume and respiratory rate or immune system adjustment.
If capacity of these mechanisms is exceeded, organism can be severely damaged. Most frequent impairments include hypoglycemia, mineral disturbances, bronchoconstriction, arrhythmia, rhabdomyolysis etc.
Early diagnosis of these conditions and knowledge of its pathophysiology is essential for minimizing of health impairment. It is also necessary do distinguish between benign changes and life threatening conditions.
This review summarizes essential findings related to physical exercise usable in military settings
