Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading diagnosis responsible for deaths of patients with malignant diseases in the Czech Republic. About 50 % of patients are diagnosed in the late stage.

Methods: The authors present a prospective study based on the results of all patients operated due to a diagnosis of CRC at our center between 2013-2015. Focus was on the type of surgery, rectosigmoid cancer, protective stoma, 30-day mortality, anastomotic leak, and stage of disease.

Results: Since 2013 we have operated on 441 patients with CRC. We give protective stoma only in medically indicated cases.

Our data are similar to data from big audits. Last year we started with the detection and testing of circulating tumor cells like prognostic and predictive markers.

Conclusions: A multidisciplinary approach, well performed surgery, and the use of new methods should be a gold standard, bringing better results to patients.
