This paper presents the building of the open port of Chemulp'o in the foreign concession period of 1883-1913. It first puts it into the context of the open port network in East Asia, most often in juxtaposition to the Japanese port of Kobe, then details the establishment of the different concessions (Chinese, Japanese, Joint Area Concession) and their specificities.

It finishes with discussing how politico-economic rivalries and colonial ambitions of foreign countries projected into the built infrastructure of Chemulp'o port.
