"Humeanism"

Abstract

The epithet "Humean" is used in metaphysics to describe positions which deny that there is, in concrete reality, necessary connection or necessary action. This use was significantly reinforced by David Lewis, who applied the adjective "Humean" in the phrase "Humean supervenience".

It is not at all clear, however, whether this use of the term is in fact appropriate. Lewis himself was not fully convinced that it was.
