The US Pivot to Asia: Historical Reflection, Current Situation and Perspectives for the Future

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences |
2016

Abstract

The chapters analyzes the US "pivot to Asia" during the Obama Administration - it focuses on the expectations associated with the "pivot" and the new US "Paciffic century", the actual steps taken by the Obama Administration and their reception by the Asian states (both the US allies and countries like China PRC) and expectations for the future. The authors argue that despite the initial high expectations and some successes that have been achieved, like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the pivot did not bring dramatic changes or shifts in the US foreign policy.

On the contrary, the US had to rebalance back to Europe following the events in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine, as well as to the Middle East to battle Daesh.
