The Sabbath-Commandment is one of the identity-markers of Jewish religion and a paradigm example of highly authoritative text with exceptionally rich reception history. Without any doubt, this passage is one of the most influential texts of the Bible throughout history.
However, surprisingly enough, this text is not presented unambiguously in the Hebrew Bible but contains variants, and already in the process of formation of the biblical traditions, it was passed down in more than one form. The study critically analyzes the plurality of expressions of the Sabbath-Commandment in the Hebrew Bible within their contexts.
The author concludes that the authority of the "Sabbath Commandment" derives from its function in the given religious context, not from its unchanging form or unvarying formulation.
