Abstract

This article presents the phenomenon of phantom islands, island that are shown on maps but which in reality do not exist. The origins and classification of phantom islands are described, along with reasons why some such islands remain in contemporary maps.

The article includes numerous examples of phantom islands and discusses their relationship with intentional and unintentional errors in map content.
