Abstract
Islam has developed in direct relation with the Christian eremitism but from the outset it has explicitly distanced itslf from this form of Christian piety. However, various ascetic practices have become an integral parts Islamic spirituality across the traditions of piety, among which character reform techniques, contemplation and isolation.
These are however either individual or are not practices within a framework of monastic life.
