Abstract

A leading thinker of the Islamic classical age, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111), brought together almost all the mental disciplines of his time. He studied Islamic law, was professor of Islamic theology and privately investigated in Greek philosophy.

At the end of his life, he captured the essence of religion in a short, dense but accessible text called The Recess of Lights (Miškát al-Anwar). The book carries the name according to the Quranic verse of Light, which is a commentary, as well as its subject - knowledge by enlightenment.

For his unconventional view of spirituality on the borders of philosophy and mysticism, The Niche has been causing astonishment for several centuries. Zora Hesova puts the text into the context of contemporary sciences and the revival of religion in Ghazali's life project.

It shows its three perspective on religion, based on the philosophical conception of human nature, on the Koran concept of God's unity (tawhid) and on Sufi spiritual practice.
