In this overview, the authorʼs opinions on contemporary possibilities of diabetes pharmacotherapy are summarized with emphasis on clinical use of the new antidiabetic drugs influencing the treatment algorithms. Besides new insulin analogs, the pallet of drugs for type 2 diabetes has been further enlarged, especially by incretins and gliflozins.
More success is being achieved using fixed combinations with newly introduced oral antidiabetic agents and those of insulin analogs with GLP-1 receptor agonists. Demands on individual selection of reliable antidiabetic drugs for each patient have increased in the past few years, not only with respect to their influence on glycoregulation but also to their cardiovascular effects.
