Pharmacotherapy of diabetes: nephrologist's perspective

Abstract

Kidney disease is very common in patients with diabetes - around one half of patients with diabetes have kidney disease therefore every physician who is taking care of diabetic patients is also very often dealing with decreased kidney function. Diabetic kidney disease leads to increased risk of cardiovascular complications and pregression of renal dysfunction.

Goal of diabetes treatment in reduction of overall and cardiovasular morbidity and mortality, prevention of microvascular complications and good quality of life. Effective diabetes treatment should be complex and besides of traditional metabolic goals should also consist of blood pressure reduction, treatment of dyslipidemia, body weight reduction and dietary intervention.

Number of different classes of antidiabetic medications is currently available. Newer classes of antidiabetics have complex mode of action with effect on multiple components of metabolic syndrome and some of them also improves cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Treatment of diabetes become multidisciplinary task in which nephrologist plays significant role.
