Optimists and Sceptics: Dramaturgy Confrontations of Sci-fi Movie Ikarie XB 1

Abstract

The study based on the primary research in the archive of Barrandov Studios focus on confrontations and negotiations between film authors and script editors which accompanied the complicated literary preparation of the sci-fi movie Ikarie XB 1 - "suppressed" adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's novel The Magellanic Cloud. The result was a bilateral compromise because of manifold shifts of the centre of the conflict and sharp changes of characters who underwent required "re-education" in the custody of the dramaturgy.

The reconstruction of the process gives the evidence about asserting of new dogmas and ideological concepts in the period when overly idealistic resolutions were failing and the ongoing revision of stalinism raised the need of the positive antipole. In the context of the strategical pushing of new optimism will be studied enforced changes of basic plot motives and their returns in the form of more refined evocations and uncoventional formal elements.

Through mapping of the evolution of these meaningful moments will be possible partially answer the question why Ikarie XB 1 became a cinematic work which exceeded the period context of the sci-fi genre.
