A great amount of burials in decorated wooden coffins were uncovered in the mastaba of Prince Werkaure (AC 26) at Abusir Centre. The stone structure, built in the Fifth Dynasty, is located to the south-east of the mortuary temple of Queen Khentkaus II (AC 14).

It was extensively damaged by robbers and poor condition of the tomb is reflected also in the preservation of the finds. Only several of the coffins survived untouched, while the majority of them was found in fragments.

Their remains were scattered in almost every room of the tomb and for the later burials an area around the mastaba, mainly to the east was used as well. This study summarizes finds of decorated wooden coffins found in the above-mentioned tomb.

It will analyse construction details, iconography and colour range. Moreover, there will be an attempt to put together some fragments so that a more comprehensive idea about later burial practices in this Old Kingdom tomb can be gained.

The study of First Millennium BC Abusir coffins may supplement our understanding of the development of burial containers not only in the Memphite area.
