Abstract
The article deals with the personality of the British scholar and explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). Above all his afterlife is of our concern.
By the term afterlife we mean especially reflection of a person's life in literature, both fictional and scholarly, and film. Burton was a distinctive and controversial figure in his time, not rarely at odds with the views of his contemporaries.
Various authors have drawn inspiration from his life in diverse and often surprising ways. It is our task here to point some of them out and to look at the particular facts of Burton's life which served as their source.
