The contribution is focused on the problematics of architectural competition during the second half of the 19th century from the point of view of French architect, theoretician and publisher of the periodics Revue générale de l'architecture et des travaux publics, César Daly. As an example is treated the competition for the new Opera building in Paris, realised by Charles Garnier.
