In the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae the root word φιλαυτ- is to be found in the works of St. Theodore the Studite 13 times.
The author of this article was satisfied to examine this term in the Great Catechesis, where the root word φιλαυτ- occurs 9 times. It can be stated that for Theodore the Studite, filautía is a passion that was one of several causes (such as pride and desire) of the first fall of man in Paradise.
Although the term filautía is not included in the classic scheme of passions presented by Evagrius Ponticus, St. Theodore introduced it into his list of main human passions.
However, this list has not a form of an inflexible scheme. In spite of that it was important for Theodor's teaching on filautía as one of the main passions.
