Angelus Novus and Éternel retour : André Malraux and Walter Benjamin

Abstract

In the paper I focused on the issues of artistic styles and their revision in the current discussion of the anachronistic time of history. The classic line of stylistic periods will be criticized by Walter Benjamin (1941) and André Malraux (Musée imaginaire, 1947).

The relationship between Benjamin and Malraux can also be found in terms of artistic styles and time as such. W.

Benjamin, based on Angelus Novus' graphic, described the basic principle of time flow. The work of art, reproduced and freed from its aura, is found in the "ruins" of the archive of history, in which Malraux reconsiders its retreat.

The "Angel of History" parallel with the painting of L'Malraux L'Éternel retour is not accidental, it is precisely this principle of re-enlightenment. Exceeding the boundary of time, we also cross the concept of style and firm anchoring of the work of art in the structure of history.

This unleashing gives us new insights into historical events and shows new correlations.
