Abstract
The article is a translation of François Hartog's treatise "Vers une nouvelle condition historique". In his essay, the French historian addresses today's relations between professional history, contemporary society, and various conceptions of historical time.
In his conception, present-day society no longer understands its history and neither is capable of any future projects, for it is marooned in the all-absorbing present.
