This book is based on the broadly conceived memoirs of Cyril Horáček (1862-1943) that he wrote mainly during the period of the First Republic. They recount the story of his life from birth to occupation of the Czech Lands by Nazi Germany in 1939.
They are a unique probe into the intellectual and social world of a distinguished Czech scientist cherishing the ambition to make his mark in politics and observed closely and comment on public life. The memoirs advance our knowledge of the Czech economic, political, social, cultural history of that period.
They afford us a number of valuable insights about individual historical figures, who are nowadays generally known, little known or forgotten. The memoirs of Horáček are supplemented with a biographical study analysing his national economy postulates and their continuity and discontinuity in time.
It analyses in depth his political stances and his political activities.
