Study from the collective monograph Czech Cinema Revisited, which was created as part of the project Digital Restoration of the Czech Film Heritage. The author focuses on Karel Steklý's films from the second half of the 1950s (Good Soldier Švejk, Beg to Report) in connection with politically conditioned efforts to update Jaroslav Hašek's work, and to revive the genre in domestic cinematography. Šlingerová explains an "illustrative" approach to the novel as a result of long-term unsuccessful attempts to adapt Ha šek through formal experiments.
