The article deals with mathematical word problems from a linguistic point of view. The first part dis - cusses the language of certain mathematical tasks based on the international inquiry TIMSS 2007.
The second part introduces the aims of the article, which are: a) to clarify methodological grounds of the research and b) to outline possibilities for further research. The next part summarises available literature related to the topic and states that in the Czech Republic the topic is basically unexplored.
The subsequent chapter briefly characterizes word problems and focuses on their analysis from the historical point of view and from the point of view of language development. The article states that in the past word problems largely extended the so-called financial literacy of the students.
In con - clusion, the article engages in brief definition of the most important linguistic parameters of con - temporary mathematical word problems.
