Central European University in Prague: A study of transnational philanthropy

Publication at Faculty of Humanities |
2017

Abstract

The book describes the case of the Prague College of Central European University (CEU) in early 1990s as a case of transnational philantropy. The College was founded by the American philantropist of a Hungarian origin, George Soros.

Based on interviews with people who participated in the College and a detailed study of archival sources the book describes the beginning of the Prague CEU College in the context of Soros philanthropy in the late 1980s and early 1990s, its transnational social networks and ideals. The closing down of the College after only a few years of existence is explained by the lack of local support in political as well as academic circles and by the lack of necessary cultural and symbolic capital.
